Description
Deep in the remote lands of Shinkami Dao, many terrors exist but none are more frightening than those of the demon worshipers. Demon spirits prowl the lands but often avoid large populated areas as they are more easily discovered and eradicated. Instead they target isolated and more vulnerable villages. There they seek to possess a number of leadership members to begin to groom the rest into following the words of the demons, forming a cult in their name. These cults brutally sacrifice anyone who refuses to follow them or attempts to run away. These ritualistic sacrifices involve stringing the victim up by their hands, removing their eyes and tongue, then completely gutting and removing all internal organs while they still breathe, to show the demons that they are merely empty husks, built only to carry the demon's spirit within. When not performing rituals for their demons, the villagers go about their business as usual, but they also build walls and hang totems made from sacrifice victims as an attempt to ward off outsiders. Should someone stumble into the village accident, they are more often than not, offered as a sacrifice. If the village requires something it cannot produce, they send raiding parties at night to steal from other nearby villages, careful not to attract attention to themselves. If they were to be discovered, demon hunters, who wander the lands seeking out these villages, would come and slaughter everyone before burning it to the ground, the spirits would then leave to seek out a new village host. The longer these villages remain possessed, the more deformities begin to appear such as elongated limbs, extra growths, pustules and boils and dark purplish skin.
